Clothes Dryers Problems

I decided to start this hub due to the amount of problems I have been having with my current clothes dryer , and what I went through to fix a few problems I had with my dryer including a broken tumbler belt and loose tumbler drum.

So the basic design of a dryer hasn't really changed much and most people will find that there dryer will last a long time and wont generally need a complete upgrade and a few fixes every now and then will keep it running for a very long time.

So depending on the design of your dryer it will look pretty much similar to the picture on the left and contain all the main components. The main parts that usually require fixes or maintenance include

- Drum belt and Rollers

- Motor and motor bearings

- Blower , heater and heat sensors

Safety and Cleaning

The first thing is to make sure everything is unplugged before starting to tinker inside your dryer, and depending on the style of your dryer pull the back door or hatch off slowly so you dont accidentally rip off the wires.

Some old dryers also have very loose tumbler drums so when opening the back door hold the drum in place to stop it from banging around inside the dryer compartment.

Cleaning

Cleaning is very important for your dryer, and after opening up my clothes dryer after about 10 years of use I could tell it really needed some regular maintenance and cleaning.

There was an amazing layer of dust covering everything and the actual box compartment was dull of dust and little bits of sand and dust. For newer dryers this may be less of a problem but sometimes if you hear your drum spinning a bit loudly it may just be a large layer of dust and dirt.

Common Problems

1. The Clothes Dryer Drum is not spinning or not spinning correctly ( loud noises and screeching sounds)

- The most common reason for the dryer drum to stop spinning is if your drum belt has snapped or has been worn down completely. This is an easy fix and simply involves buying a replacement belt and feeding it through the pulleys and on the roller and then back around the middle of the drum.

- The rollers could have worm out causing the drum to spin in a bumpy and noisy manner , these are the little circle shaped objects your dryer actually sites and can usually be replaced depending on how old your dryer is. The pulleys could also be broken causing problems.

- The motor could have died after many years of use if the drum is not moving at all and if it is moving the motor bearing could be off causing to spin around very roughly and sometimes scratch against the sides of the dryer compartment.

- Noises coming from the dryer when its plugged in and spinning could also be due to a huge amount of dust built up around the dryer drum. Sometimes cleaning out the inside of your dryer and returning the drum to the correct position can fix this problem.

Screeching noises are not a good sign and sometimes its a sign that you drum is slowly cutting into the sides of your dryer which could permanently put your dryer out of use if its continues.

Digital multimeter, look for resistance settings or OHMS symbol
Digital multimeter, look for resistance settings or OHMS symbol

Clothes Dryer Heat Problems

Another common problem is that your dryer will either run too hot or too cold , and sometimes take many cycles to simply dry a few items.A useful device that could in handy for testing that each component is working is a simple multimeter or volt meter you can buy from an electronics store.

The way you test the functionality of each component is to get your multimeter or voltmeter and put on the lowest Resistance setting,

Temperature Switch - Leads on switch terminal should read zero or infinity

same for thermostat, heating coils and timer testing.

The most causes of these sorts of issues are

- The temperature sensors could be dead or fried and need replacing, they look like little silver dollars and are usually located under the drum.

- The exhaust outlet could be clogged with dust and dirt causing your dryer to run hotter than the temperature you set it at.

- thermostat or heating coils could be defective and need replacement

- There could also be problems with the timer, if the timer is not working correctly this may cause the heater and blower to remain inactive.

- The fuse is dead and needs to be replaced.

Dryer totally Dead wont Start

So your dryer wont start at all this can be caused by the failure of one or more components and is sometimes hard to pin point.

The most common are below apart from problems relating to your power mains

  • Timer or thermostat
  • Terminal block
  • Start switch

If anyone has any problems with there old simpson dryer I may be able to help you out as I spent a lot of time tinkering with my old simpsons clothes dryers.

Nice thread, Found out recently that one of the most common reasons for the drum belts to break is overloading the dryer with heavy dryer loads. Replacement cost's through a repair maintanance can cost between $70 and $125.

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 2 years ago

thanks for the comment OlePort207, yea its amazing how much some of these repair doods and doodets charge for a simple repair task

yeaa overloading would be bad, when u look inside a dryer , the drum really doesn't seem to have much support just a few rollers and a belt.

hi expectus, I have a simpson 4kg dryer. When I turn it on the drum doesn't spin. But if I open the door and give the drum a good spin with my hand, then close the door quickly, the motor kicks in. It's like I'm giving it a push start! It only lasts for 30-60 seconds before cutting out. With an empty load, the drum keeps spinning, but still requires the kickstart. Any ideas?? I'm thinking it could be a sensor prob, as the belt and motor seem fine. It's about 3 years old but not used that much.

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi derek, it kind of sounds like the rollers that the drum sits on have been bent out of shape or the drum isn't sitting quite right.

apart from that your probably right about the sensor part , it can't tell the doors been closed or something like that. sorry can't be much more help

Great advice here. My Kenmore 600 dryer suddenly (yesterday) makes very loud grinding noise when plugged in... can't tur off w/ dial either, have to unplug. I just turned on today and it sounds OK? Could it just need to be cleaned out? What is GRINDING sound

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 2 years ago

Sounds like a loose drum to me, had the same problem was like the drum was cutting into the actual dryer structure. This can be due to a few things but most common thing is worn out rollers or belt. Or yes it could be dust my old one was so dirty it had 5 cm thick dust pockets, try cleaning it out first before you attempt to replace anything

This is quite useful. The costs of repair on some of the appliances nowadays, it's through the roof. In some cases, it's better to buy a brand new one. Good to know.

Very useful site today. My dryer made a loud bang and stopped spinning today. Was that a belt that broke?

Thank you for commments.. just in past 2 weeks my dryer has become very loud. Seems to be drying and spinnning just SUPER loud. I think my neighbors may beat me if i dont fix it.

Question: How do you get the lint that has falling back into the machine from the lint screen? Thank you very much

expectus profile image

mark - sounds like a broken belt or excess dirt, the only way to get that lint is to actually unscrew it and open it up

expectus profile image

sounds like a broken belt to me, humming would just be the motor trying to turn a belt that has snapped or has been dislodged

Danielle 2 years ago

Ok, so I have a Fisher & Paykel dryer that thinks the door is open when it is infact closed. It beeps at me 4 times to let me know the door is open and refuses to start... even when I SLAM the darn door!! can you help???

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 2 years ago

it sounds like the door sensor has been damaged and is not detecting the door closing. I'm not familiar with your dryer but depending on whether it has a sensor or its an actual physical latch type thing you may be able to do some dodgy handywork at your own risk or get it fixed.

some sensors just need to be covered (with tape or something), some door sensors need to be pushed in you'll have to take a look and see how your door sensor works. goodluck

We changed the broken belt on our Magtag dryer, but now the dryer makes a loud noise. Also I use to be able to turn the inside drum by hand when the dryer was off. Now I cannot turn the drum by hand. Any suggestions for what is wrong with the way we repplaced the belt?

Amanda and Doug 2 years ago

Hello,

I have a Kenmore that I have had for about 4 almost 5 years. It has been doing great for me than all of a sudden one day I got to dry some clothes that morning not htinking anything of it went to the park with my kids and cam einside about 2 hours later and it was still on opened it up and the close were even still wet. I was able to put it on permanant press and it would get a little heat. But now nothing, it still spins but the timer doesnt move and it has stopped heating. What do you think I need to buy to fix it. We just went out and purchased a timer and we are waiting for that to come in. Do you think it could be anything else other than that or do you think that is what it is as well?

Thanks

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 2 years ago

Diane - sounds like the belt is not sitting on the rollers correctly which means it can't actually turn the drum, try and check if your belt is resting on the rollers properly.

A & D - It is most likely the timer, if the timer does not work it usually wont turn on the heat, if that doesn't work the heating coils may have snapped , it can be as easy as just winding them around each other with a spare piece of wire but its only a temporary fix usually, its just so the electricity can run through the entire heating element and heat up, try at your own risk :)

Amanda and Doug 2 years ago

Thanks! My thought was the heating element and or the timer so if the timer doesnt work, then I will just get a new heating element too. Thanks again for the help.

Diane 2 years ago

Thank you for your input. I will try to see if the belt is on the rollers correctly.

Mei 24 months ago

I'm using my dryer today when I noticed the machine stop spinning and have 30 minutes left in it. when I open the door, there's light and there's a heat coming from the machine. I waited until its cool off then I open the lid to check if its the belt and the belt is still intact. What could be the other cause of it.

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 24 months ago

Did the time still count down? the timer may be dead otherwise the belts may have slipped off the rollers or are not running around the motor correctly

kyle 23 months ago

My fisher and paykel dryer won't rotate. I use to be able to turn the drum by hand but I am only able to move it manually in reverse now. Do you think my problem is with the belt or something more serious.

I have a maytag dryer model no LDE 610.it gets overheated within seconds(unfortunately last time, when i load,it was oveload).also v cud feel a burnt smell outside,i mean from vent ,also when v open the door,v cud get that smell.cud u plz troubleshoot?

Smitch 23 months ago

We've got a Simpson 6kg... 16months old... it's been making a thump/bang noise for a few months now has just started screeching... I looked inside and at the middle back of the drum (where the "spindle/bolt" is) is a lot of burred metal... looks nasty and as if it would rip clothes... any easy fix/ideas??

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 23 months ago

kyle - just sounds like the belt , otherwise its not sitting on the rollers correctly

sab - sounds like it needs a good clean out to avoid overheating from dust, apart from that you might want to check your temperature sensor is working properly

smitch - its not sitting correctly and just cutting through the metal, not sure if its beyond repair but you can open it up and make sure its spinning without scratching against the sides of the body

cathy 22 months ago

I can see my dryer belt is worn out....how do I get into this to replace the belt?????

Boney35 22 months ago

Hi expectus,

This seems like a very popular site for Dryer problems. Probably because of all the useful information it contains. I have a fisher and Pykel dryer, and when I put more than 1 towel in to dry, it refuses to spin and makes a humming sound. If I lighten the load to 1 towel, then it works as normal.

Any ideas?

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 22 months ago

cathy - you'll have to open it up and dislodge the belt from the rollers and motor, can be a bit of a pain or you can just cut it , if you are definitely replacing it

Boney35 - sounds like your motor is on the way out, or the belt is not sitting on the motor properly so its not getting the full rotations and power.

fixorbuy 21 months ago

I have a 9yo Amana "commercial quality" gas dryer LGA30AW. It still dries great, but is making a high-pitched whine that is louder from outside house vs. inside, and is getting louder as time goes on, and even with more dryer loads. Neighbor describes sound as akin to a jet engine's pitch. Any ideas on fixing?

Christina 21 months ago

I have a Whirlpool that I replaced the belt on last summer. Now I come home and find the clothes only partially dry (I know I started the dryer) and all I can hear is a very quiet 'whirring' sound at the start knob. Has the motor gone bad? No breaker thrown, drum tumbles fine and the door latch seems to be in working order. It's a 6+ year old dryer.

Shelley 20 months ago

My Kenmore dryer (older model) is making a very loud noise when I turn it on. When I first loaded it I heard a snap and then the drum wouldn't work. When I pushed the start button I only heard an electric buzz and nothing else would happen. I took the clothes out, not a bigt load, and came back a few minutes later and pushed the start button and this time it started but makes a deafening noise and inside the dryer it is very very hot, even when I put it on just air drying. Do you have an estimate of the repair costs? Better to buy a new one?

expectus profile image

expectus Hub Author 20 months ago

fixorbuy - sounds like you have a worn out belt or the motor needs to be oiled up or it could even be a buildup of dirt and dust

Christina - yea sounds like your right ,the motor could have given up , or it could be the temperature sensor that has given up and needs to be replaced.

Shelley - sounds like the belt needs to replaced, or the belt could have just fallen off the rollers

Marie Boudreau 20 months ago

I have an old GE Electric Dryer. Just stopped spinning, but still heats up.

Belt is not broken, so Dad put back on and it made really loud noise and fell off again.

Could belt have been put on incorrectly? There is a smooth side. Which side goes down on the drum? Could something else be wrong?

Thanks,

My dryer runs constant and isnt heating, do you know whats may be the problem ?

Ed 18 months ago

my dryer would not run, so I used the multi-tester to check the thermal fuse and it showed continuity. When somebody came out to look at it, the thermal fuse was the problem. The test showed continuity which I guess is bad, I am confused. Can a thermal fuse show continuity on a digital tester and still be bad.

I have a dryer that will start with no load or a very small load inside. Ive pulled it apart, cleaned all the dust out, checked the rollers and belt. All good. When i start it with a heavy load you can hear a click from the motor as if there were a klixon or overload preventing the motor to start. Possibly to much current on start up? Any suggestions. Im unable to get a multimeter to check the current. Are these motors protected with overloads.

Kenmore dryer belt issue. Our dryer is making a loud thumping sound every turn. When you first start the dryer it is like there is a delay and then the loud noise kicks in We took the top off and the belt is not broken BUT it is not in the middle either it is 3/4 the way to the back of the drum and I can slip a finger between the belt and drum What do you think needs to be replaced?

My dryer was working fine and now it just want do anything. When I hit the start button it makes a quit sound like it wants to start but doesn't. Could it be my switch????

John 16 months ago

Our dryer just recently started making a LOUD "boom" noise, occasionally, and randomly. It's not a "bang" but a "boom". We're worried it might be something with the gas, since it is a gas dryer.

I've searched online extensively, but it seems like most "noise" problems involve a constant noise, or rumbling, screeching, banging.. but not really a "boom" noise.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kim  16 months ago

Our dryer makes a loud sound but refuses to start. The light is on when I open the door but no other power. It seemed if we let it go for a while it would reset itself but no luck this time. It hasn't started in over 12 hours with doing nothing. Could it be the drum, a power switch or something else?

Thanks for your help in advance.

My Maytag dryer is working ok but has become extremely loud. Reminds me a car in need of a new muffler. Any thoughts on what may be the problem. Thanks.

Derrick 15 months ago

Nicole- you said it makes a sound like it wants to start? If all the lights/controls on the machine seem to work, and there is no humming noise or anything (besides maybe a single "click") when you start it, most likely your belt has broken or come off. On some dryers, when a belt breaks, the tensioner then activates a killswitch. That keeps the motor from operating if there is no belt.

I have a DE tumble dry part of a front loading pair. The dryer works fine, but there is thumping as some part of the drum hits something on the top part of the dryer. Any ideas as to the culprit and can I fix this myself?

gg 14 months ago

I have a GE Profile front loader dryer and it has worked great for 5 years now. We have been sick so my husband did about 15 loads of laundry today so it got a workout with all of the familys "throw-up towels". Anyway, now you go to start the dryer and it only makes a loud buzzer sound when you push start. Wont spin or do anything, just screams a loud BUZZ. What do you think? Thank you. GG

Fisher and Paykel dryer. Drum rotates freely when moved by hand. Motor won't start with medium to large load but runs ok when rotating drum to a position where it will start up, then runs ok until clothes are dry. Runs ok with small or no load. Motor appears to run ok when disengaging drive belt. All dirt and fluff cleaned out and rollers running freely. No unusual noise heard.

Hi mate, I have a simpso maxidry 505. It isnt mounted upside down on a wall, but is on a table. One issue is I dont have a lint cover. The main roblem is it turns it self off and seems pretty hot. t will restart if left for a while. It also seems to get a bit of water under it after a load. It weird tho cause soetimes it works ok. Any ideas? Cheers Rach

ValentineDay Twin 9 months ago

Condensation in the dryer after the clothes are dry and the dryer cools, is the result of the vent being blocked due to lint. Clean all the lint out, including where the ductwork goes into the dryer's back, and the problem should be eliminated. If the ductwork is long ( as in my apt. building ) a powerful yard blower works good to clean it out.

Hi All. I have an old Simpson 10S and it runs fine for about 3 to 5 minutes. It heats up and the drum spins but after that time it trips the circuit breaker. I took the back off as I thought the heating coil was earthing out when it warmed up so I sat the coil on some insulation and ran it but is still does the same so it is not earthing out. The coil seems to get red hot on both high and low settings. Is it possible the thermostat can cause this short circuit if it allows the coil to run continuously on full?

For the newer samsung machines that eat the belt ( common problem) use the part # 33002535 by FSP, its a maytag belt of much higher quality than the original and fits perfectly. If you move the drum by hand the belt will pop off the tensioner, its an easy 30 min fix and there are a couple of good youtube videos on this but DONT buy the original belt its a POS. This replacement looks like it was made for a car, nylon reinforcement and high quality rubber.

Hi. My dryer is acting very strange. When there are clothes in it and it's running, it's fine. No problems. But then when the load stops and I take out the clothes (or even if I leave the clothes in there for a few minutes), it keeps making a sound like it wants to start up again. It's like a roaring sound, kind of how it sounds as soon as it starts. It doesn't ever start on its own, but it keeps making the sound every few seconds, sometimes for days, as if it's trying to start up again. What should I do?

I have a Whirlpool Ingils Dryer and it runs for a few minutes then shuts off then starts running again etc..It takes a very long time to dry a load of clothes. Any suggestions?

I have a maytag de303, was troubleshooting my dryer for lack of heat. Found a wilderness of lint and debris in the lint tray and below, cleaned out that and the pipe underneath that goes to the vent to outside. Heating coils are putting out heat and I can feel the heat inside the dryer now but now the dryer is extremely loud. Clothes are on the drying rack, thoughts.

I have a Kenmore dryer 90 series. It's making a loud humming noise, and then shutsdown. The noise contines to get louder until it shuts off. After a while it tries to start up again, but never stays on long. It's warm and tumbling, but it won't stay on to finish a load. Is it the motor? We opened up. There was nothing but lent was covering everything. We cleaned it off and put it back together, yet the same problem continues to occur. Can you tell me what you think?

We have a new LG dryer. When is drys and the gas kicks on it makes a grinding sound like a kids toy for 10-15 seconds. The repair guy changed the igniter but still doing it. He said he thought it might be my gas line but the noise is absolutely coming from the dryer. We had no issues with the old dryer just the new one.

We have a Kenmore heavy duty washer and dryer, and for some reason the other day when I was pushing the washer further back into place my arm touched the back of the dryer and I got a nasty shock while touching the back of the washer, so I checked with my volt meter and when you touch one diode to the back of the washer and the other to the back of the dryer they complete the current and become of electricity making both backs totally live. What could be causing this?

When I opened my tumble drier door the other day the power stayed on and it kept going round but now it won't go on at all! Any idea what the problem could be? Surely something to do with the catch on the door?

My dryer has been squealing like it wants to end its misery for a couple of months, & now it won't turn if there's more than 1/2 a large load inside. it will just sit & hum until you take out the clothes, then go on as normal. Heats great, gets everything dry...It's an older Fridgidaire(bought from one of those guys who fixes & resells appliances almost 7 years ago & it was at least a few years old then)& has been great until now. So the question is should I just repair this thing, or buy a new one? I hear from everyone that the newer ones have cheap plastic parts that break quickly, even the more expensive brands, so maybe I should just get this old grandaddy dryer repaired???

I have had 'dryer blues' for about 15yrs. I never considered repairing a dryer until I got a quality whirlpool dryer brand new and 2 yrs later the dry stopped. I have been enlighteded looking at this page and ehow.com videos, and I can take this dryer apart in my sleep and replace the belt (less than $5 at lowes) in no time. I am so excited. (but will be very deliberate as this is my first time.) I do not hear any clicking or buzzing when I press the button so is it is not the belt but is the switch... I will be bock. I want to send a nod in recognition of the pictures of the alternative dryer methods on this page and add top of the closet door and all rooms of the house doors (overnight)and also for those who have outside balconys that look onto woodsy areas (for fresh air dryer) just spread clothes on hanger and hook em high. Note: you may need heavy spray starch if ironing.

Hi there

Brilliant thread, thank you for all of your input

My girlfriend has a simpson sirocco 350 dryer, and it suddenly stopped working..I thought it was the timer but it does the count down. I tested it with a multimeter and there is a connection between the terminals when its counting so that might eliminate the timer problem.

The dryer simply won't start, and no heat comes on from the element. Has anyone experienced this before?

The drum seems to turn fine and when I turn it manually there seems to be a bit of weight to it and I assume that the belts are ok

Just fitted a vent through the wall and lined it up to small vent on the rear of dryer. Problem is this vent seems to be the in take and blows out through the front door? Is the dryer running in reverse? With the vent fitted it starves as the vent sucks shut ! What do you think ?

I like your page..I have a whirlpool roper dryer and recently the knob where the blue line is, that part came off so now the alignment is messed up and I have no clue what setting it's on when I start it..it's really upsetting me lol I've stood there and tried to mark where it starts and stops and then figure out which setting it is, but then when I restart it to check my marks, it's different lol so I've been sitting here trying to find out how to reset it so it's at the correct alignment or if I should just buy a new knob..but even if I buy a new knob, will it re-align itself when I put it back on lol help please!!

I have an old -- 35-year+ -- Whirlpool electric dryer and just yesterday it stopped heating. Checked the fuse/breaker and it's fine. Can's find a model number on it that isn't painted over. What order should it use to diagnose problem... or jump right to element? How do I search for part when I don't know model #?

Hi Expectus,

I was just running my dryer, a Maytag model # LDE7500ACW, it was running fine. All of a sudden it starts making this LOUD noise (like an airplane?). It is getting hot, and drum is spinning, I have never had any problems with it, but got it used from a friend about 2 years ago. I use it EVERY DAY. Please, please HELP!!

HELP!! Frigidaire gallery dryer not heating. Had been working for several loads then turned it on. Strong burning smell. Scratchy noise. Flamish sparks in the back. I turned it off. Then hesitantly tried it again. Now not heating up, no other signs. What does this mean. New parts or new dryer?

I got a question, The other day the dryer quit heating, SO we thought it would be the element, But i ran home on lunch and tried it again and everything worked fine. Now it gets hot just sitting there without being turned on? Even with the door open?

expectus, Very helpful and well presented. Fortunately my dryer works like a dream. One tip which I have always observed is to always, always, always, remove lint from the lint trap after each load.

Any chance of doing a hub on washer repair and common problems? My washer works like a champ but I've noticed that during the first wash cycle the agitation seems loud. Other than that, no problems.

Thank for this practical hub.

I went to turn my dryer on I sounded like it was gonna start but didn't. I then started to smell the burn electrical wire type smell..and it won't start. Is it down for the count?

I have a stackable washer and dryer. My dryer heating element looks like it has alot of lent around it. Whats the best way to get it apart to get the lint around it or is that just a fire protection lint?

lisa mc 3 months ago

Hi, great info. just thought i would add my experience with my dryer. My condenser dryer stopped working and all it was was the cut off switch at the back behind a flip open compartment, it had got stuck and the machine thought that the water in the removable water container had not been emptied and had overflowed. a spray of WD40 and it was fixed. The other problem I have had was that the machine sounded like it was working but the drum was not turning, it wasn't the belt or the motor as i could give the drum a push start but it stopped every time it was going to change directions. It was the capacitor, which I replaced for around £7. The capacitor can however hold a dangerous charge even after machine is unplugged, so take care or get someone else to do it.

I have a kenmore 80 series dryer and when I start it, it works fine for about 5-10 seconds then shuts off! After shutting off, a few minutes later I hear a switch click then I can start it again! But it repeats the same process! Anyone know what the problem is?

I have a Kenmore 90 series dryer model #66902690. It works fine for about 60 minutes then shuts off and it will not turn on for awhile. I'm guessing it has to cool down first then it repeats the same process. It's about 15 years old so I expect it not to be as good as new but does anyone know what the problem is and would it be worth repairing vs buying a new one?

I just replaced the heat sensore and the seal on the drum of my whirlpool. It makes a noise though everytime the heat comes on. The heat comes on every few seconds? I think that the noise is from that. Any idea what could cause that? I'm ready to fix that too.

Hey Gabe it sounds more like a belt issue if your hearing noises , or the belt is not sitting on the rollers correctly.

or does it sound like the heat is not constant?

Kim 5 weeks ago

My dryer suddenly started making a loud rattlingclanking sound. The drum still spins and it is heating, it's just really loud! It's a Kenmore dryer that is 3-4 years old. What do you think it could be? Estimated cost of repair? Is it worth fixing or is it time to replace? Sears wants $75 just to look at it!

We have a whirlpool dryer and just replaced the belt, pulley, and rollers. The loud noise it was making has basically stopped but it still makes the same noise every 15 minutes or so.(its a loud rumbling noise). I have no clue what else could be wrong. Also, I cleaned out all the built up dust and debris from all the parts. ???
